Dr. Sidney W. Fu joined the faculty of the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 1999. Currently, Dr. Fu is a professor of Medicine and of Microbiology, Immunology and Tropical Medicine, and Associate Director of Genomic Medicine in the Department of Medicine. He is a member of GW's DC D-CFAR program. He served as director of the Genomics Core Facility and asssociate director of McCormick Genomics Center at GW from 2005 to 2010.
Dr. Fu is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Human Genetics, and the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America. He is also a member of the editorial boards of International Journal of Biological Science and Journal of Cancer. He has been a guest professor of Xi'an Jiaotong University College of Medicine since 2003.
Dr. Fu's main research interest is cancer genomics. He is focused on the biomarker identification and validation for the early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. He has a long standing interest in small ncRNAs, including miRNAs, siRNAs, snRNAs, snoRNAs, etc. in tumor initiation and progression so that early and effective preventive and therapeutic regimes can be developed. In collaboration with Dr. Fred Brody, Dr. Fu is deciphering the molecular mechanisms of the resolution of Type II diabetes following bariatric surgery. They are also working to decipher the underlining genomic differences between the obese diabetic and obese non-diabetic patients, in order to identify biomarkers that would shed light on Type II diabetes prevention and drug intervention. Dr. Fu's research program is funded by the NIH/NCI, Wendy Case Foundation, KACST fund and other private foundations.
