Biography

Dr. Panjrath joined the faculty of the George Washington University in 2013 as the Director of the Heart Failure Program to develop an advanced heart failure program including mechanical circulatory support program. He also is an advanced heart failure consultant at the Inova Fairfax hospital and adjunct faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He serves on multiple committees and councils at both American College of Cardiology as well as American Heart Association. He is the Chair of Acute Heart Failure working group and the Careers in Heart Failure working group at American College of Cardiology (ACC) and is on the leadership council of Heart Failure Section at ACC. He serves as ad-hoc reviewer for multiple imaging and cardiology journals. He is a keen educator and is the co-chair of the annual heart failure and arrhythmia symposium at GW. Apart from teaching medical students and trainees, he also mentors fellows from the International Medical Program and M.P.H./P.A. program of the school of public health. He serves on the medical school curriculum re-design committee as the clinical lead for cardiovascular physiology.

Research

Dr. Panjrath has been an author or co-author on multiple publications and abstracts in high-impact journals. He has also received multiple research awards from different societies. Most recently he was recipient of the American College of Cardiology Young Investigator Award in 2013. Previous research awards include: American Society of Nuclear Cardiology/ Fujisawa Healthcare Award for Basic or Applied Scientific Research, Cardiovascular Institute/ Millennium Pharmaceutical Grant Award, American College of Physicians National Associates Research Paper Award. He has been principal investigator or sub-investigator on multiple clinical trials.

Recent research activities include:

  • Mobile health projects harnessing cell phone technology for the treatment of heart failure and diabetes. He is co-PI on a pilot study assessing the benefits of community health workers plus mHealth for the management of heart failure.
  • Developed a fraility based risk model for patients undergoing vascular procedures.
  • Ongoing research on alterations in muscle energetics in heart failure and diabetes mellitus
  • Role of dietary sodium content in heart failure
  • Clinical trials for heart failure and diabetes mellitus

Dr. Panjrath is the co-founder and co-director of the Alliance for Nutrition in Health and Disease, which is a collaborative effort with Food and Friends to provide healthy food to underserved patients with poorly managed chronic diseases (diabetes mellitus and heart failure)
