A New Internship Program for Graduate Students SAMHSA is Accepting Applications for CSAP’s Prevention Fellowship Program Graduate Student Internship

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Substance Abuse Mental Health Services
Administration’s (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) is now accepting applications for the Prevention Fellowship Program’s Graduate Student Internship.
 

The Graduate Student Internship, one component of CSAP’s Prevention Fellowship Program, invites up to 30 qualified graduate students from schools of public, behavioral, and allied health to apply for a 48-week paid internship program in participating State agencies throughout the United States. (Visit the application Web site at www.seiservices.com/SAMHSA/csap for a list of participating States.)

The purpose of the CSAP Prevention Fellowship Program Graduate Student Internship is to offer participants front-line experience in the field of substance abuse prevention. Interns will learn new techniques, master best practices in the field, and apply knowledge gained from their graduate school experience. During the internship, which will combine Web-based training and hands-on experience, students will be assigned to State agency mentors for on-site training and workforce development within the State’s substance abuse prevention system.
 

Please note that graduate interns are accepted on a State-by-State basis, as all States are not eligible participants in the Prevention Fellowship Program’s Graduate Student Internship. Interns will receive a stipend of $15 per hour and will be required to work 40 hours per week. They will not be provided with insurance, travel, lodging, per diem allowances, or conference registration reimbursement.

WHO CAN APPLY
Graduate students from any State seeking selection into the internship program must meet the following criteria and provide associated documentation:
(1) U.S. citizenship or U.S. Territories and Pacific Jurisdictions residency;
(2) enrollment in a graduate school for public, behavioral, and allied health;
(3) two letters of recommendation;
(4) a detailed essay or paper of not more than two pages on why the candidate should be selected for the internship and how selection would support his or her career goals; and
(5) a strong interest in the substance abuse prevention field.
(Please note that an applicant residing in a non-participating State may submit an application to an agency internship site outside of their State.)

Applications must be received by the due date to be considered. Selected candidates are expected to begin their internships on January 25, 2010, and no later than February 1, 2010. Applicants will be notified of selection status on or before January 11, 2010. Start dates may be altered slightly, in some instances, to accommodate unforeseen circumstances.

This position requires Board Certification in Psychiatry or eligibility for Board Certification.

NATURE OF WORK: The Family Health Administration, within the Deputy Secretariat for Public Health Services, works to protect, promote and improve the health and well-being of all Marylanders and their families through community-based public health efforts, giving special attention to at-risk and vulnerable populations. The Research Analyst works with others in the State Office of Rural Health to promote health professional recruitment and retention in rural areas of the state. Functions will include researching workforce development strategies and funding options, documenting workforce need, providing data and other technical assistance to project partners, workforce performance monitoring, and completing administrative duties as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: Requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university, preferably in Public Health, another health discipline, or a related degree. A Masters degree and a background that includes experience in health workforce development, data analysis, and rural health are preferred. The successful candidate will be people-oriented, highly motivated and organized, have strong written and oral communication skills, and enjoy working in a dynamic, multi-tasking environment.

The Center for Minority Health Services Research-CMHSR (Funded by AHRQ) announces a postdoctoral individual fellowship in health services research/outcomes research. This postdoctoral research fellowship provides an opportunity for one or more years of training in applying concepts of epidemiology, behavioral health, and drug therapy to the study of health care disparities in the nation and internationally. 
 
The Center for Minority Health Services Research (CMHSR) was founded in 2002 and is housed in the School of Pharmacy at Howard University. The purpose of this Center is to conduct health services research and outcomes research, particularly as to how it affects minority populations. Additionally, the mission of the Center is to focus on areas of health care that have been identified as Health Disparity concerns. Faculty from the School of Pharmacy, Division of Nursing, Division of Allied Health, and College of Medicine form a core of experienced and diverse researchers who strive to add valuable information to the body of knowledge. Currently, the Center is focused on developing projects and conducting analyses in the areas of HIV/AIDS, Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, Women’s Health, and the aging population.
 
The postdoctoral program is aimed at producing independent researchers who are competent in conducting health services research, and translating research results into practical solutions to address health concerns. Applicants must have received, by the activation date of the CMHSR postdoctoral fellowship, a Ph.D. (or similar doctoral degree) in one of the following disciplines: Epidemiology, Health Behavior, Health Services Research, Psychology, Sociology, or similar area. The applicant should be a highly motivated individual, able to work independently in a multidisciplinary setting, and interested in developing a research career. ESI, an employee-owned government contractor, is seeking a Program Analyst III to support the Division of Prevention, Traumatic Stress, and Special Programs (DPTSSP) of the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

DPTSSP has adopted a public health, population-based approach to its work, building on the core message that “mental health is everyone’s responsibility.” This work in public health promotes the use of research-based approaches that support recovery and enhance resilience. It also promotes the prevention of behavioral problems, suicide, bullying, and youth violence. DPTSSP’s work emphasizes proactive approaches that help prevent mental health problems from developing or mitigating those that do occur¬¬—especially among children and youth.

This position works onsite at the SAMHSA office in Rockville, MD and will focus on the Spring 2009 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, Preventing Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Disorders among Young People: Progress and Possibilities and how it might serve as a roadmap for future DPTSSP initiatives. It will also include performing various analytical functions necessary to support the goals and mission of the IOM report in relation to those of SAMHSA/CMHS/DPTSSP.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
• Conducts a thorough analysis of the contents of the IOM report;
• Compares the mission, goals, and activities of SAMHSA/CMHS/DPTSSP to those of the IOM report;
• Makes strategic recommendations for how SAMHSA/CMHS/DPTSSP can help meet the objectives and further the mission of the IOM report with special emphasis on mental health promotion and why it is important;
• Meets with Federal Project Officers and other stakeholders to develop and implement agreed upon recommendations and initiatives;
• Assists with the development of social marketing and issue positioning strategies related to the recommendations and initiatives;
• Prepares related recommendations and strategies for presentation to Federal partners and other stakeholders; and
• Presents recommendations and strategies at designated meetings, including out-of-town travel (approximately 8 days per year), as needed.

This is a not an entry-level position. Listed skills and education are essential.

 Internship/Practicum Positions
 
The interns/practicum students for this position will support all operations
of Social Solutions as needed, including contributing to proposal
development, coordinating projects, conceptualizing and implementing new
programs, and collecting and analyzing data.
 
 Education/Experience
 
Bachelors level in psychology, sociology, or equivalent. A car to
travel between sites throughout the DC metropolitan area required.
Knowledge of public health issues, such as substance abuse, domestic
violence, and HIV/AIDS a plus. Experience collecting data and working on a
research team a plus. Must be able to work a flexible schedule with some
evening hours, as needed.
 
 Responsibilities
 
.     Implement research and tracking protocols for various research studies
 
.     Conduct data collection activities as research protocols dictate
 
.     Assist with the creation and cleaning of data bases as well as
data entry
 
.     Maintain the inventory of study questionnaires and other
research related materials
 
.     Contribute to other projects, as needed. Contributions may
