Fitness Center Intern - Summer 2010
The Hershey Company has a great opportunity for a 12 week internship beginning as soon as May 2010 and ending in August 2010. This is a full time position requiring 35-40 hours per week. This position is separate and different from our paid Internship program. However, at the conclusion of the internship, a $1,200 stipend will be paid to the intern.

The wellness program includes two on-site Fitness Centers and numerous fitness rooms at various locations. The main Fitness Center, a 30,000 sq. ft. facility, is available to employees, employees' spouses, retirees, retiree's spouses, contractors, and eligible dependents. This facility includes a Cardio-theater room, a weight training room, an aerobics room, a gymnasium, an indoor walking/running track, and an indoor swimming pool. A satellite facility is located near the corporate headquarters building and is 8,000 sq. ft. It offers a variety of cardiovascular and selectorized weight training equipment along with an aerobics room. At this location, there is also a 1.6 mile jogging/walking trail with a 20 station Fit-Trail and an outdoor sand volleyball court.
 
Responsibilities:

The Women’s Sports Foundation®, a national nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, is accepting online applications for an internship position to work with It Takes A Team! Education Campaign for LGBT Issues in Sport. The internship is full-time for June-August 2009 and part-time for the August-December and January-May sessions. This internship will be under the direction of the It Takes A Team! Director. Interns work in our Washington, D.C., area office (Bethesda, Md.) for the hours of 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The intern position is non-paid, but participants may obtain school credit.

DUTIES:
The position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief Operating Officer, Superintendent, Senate Office Buildings, Senate Health and Fitness Facility. The incumbent serves as a Health and Fitness Specialist and is responsible for administering and conducting activities and programs in health, exercise, nutrition and stress management that serve to improve the general health and well being of the Members.

Plans, develops, and administers the health promotion program throughout the area of responsibility. Screens visitors to ensure the safety and security of participating Members. Required to work extended hours when the Senate is in session.

Consults individually with each participant and develops personalized strategies for promoting physical health to improve the quality of life for the Members. Educates and encourages all Members to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle that promotes physical, psychological, emotional, and social well-being. Instructs participants on how to exercise safely and effectively, with discussions and demonstrations. Integrates health promotion concepts into all aspects of the wellness program by establishing and maintaining motivational working relationships with Members.

Prepares the procurement request rationale document for submission to the contracting office. Monitors the cost, management, and overall technical performance of the contract after award. Performs the technical evaluation of proposals in accordance with The Architect of the Capitol's source evaluation and selection procedures. Assists in the close-out of completed contracts, including completing the evaluation of the contractor's performance form and the memorandum to the contracting office.

Determines technical factors, sets controls and operates equipment and instruments
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of nutrition, physical fitness, addictions prevention, stress and weight management, and disease and injury risk prevention utilized in administering a health promotion program.

Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and techniques of physical fitness training.
Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and techniques of massage therapy.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicant must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation(CPR), and the use of Automated External Defibrilation(AED).
Applicant must have experience performing musculoskeletal evaluation, modality therapy, reconditioning/therapeutic exercise and therapeutic massage.
Applicant must have experience applying physical fitness screening procedures such as Maximum and Sub-maximum Graded Exercise Test, Heart Risk Assessment, Flexibility Test, Body Composition Determination and/or Energy Expenditure Calculations.
MINIMUM FEDERAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifying experience for the GS-11 level includes one (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the GS-10 including support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE
The experience requirements for the GS-11 level may be met by completion of three (3) years of graduate level education or a doctorate in a medical, health, or related field.
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements.

SUMMARY

The Health Promotion Coordinator position is responsible for the planning, coordination and delivery of health and fitness promotion activities throughout their geographical area of responsibility to facilitate behavior change, maximize engagement and outcomes, and customer satisfaction.  

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES  

Primary:

  • Contributes to the business planning and health promotion/wellness intervention process.
  • Coordinates the planning and delivery of regional wellness programs including health awareness and educational campaigns, fitness center classes and activities, behavior change programs, health assessments and health screenings at all designated client locations; continually evaluate and enhance program delivery channels through the network.
  • Interacts directly with client employees approximately 70% of the time; facilitates individual and group behavior change programs including health improvement programs, one-on-one health coaching, and meeting presentations.
  • Leads and proactively contributes to the wellness committee meetings; acquires program buy-in and support through all levels of the organization.
  • Promotes and markets the wellness program effectively to target populations by utilizing existing resources.
  • Integrates effectively and seamlessly with client health partners including safety and other employee health-related departments.  Participates in partner meetings to maximize program exposure.
  • Collect and evaluate appropriate program data to support the ROI process; manages and reports data for their geographic area.
  • Maintains accurate records and ensure confidentiality of data collected through the health assessment, on-site screenings and health promotion activities. 

Secondary:

  • Identify qualified field health educators to deliver portions of the interventions to the organization as needed; evaluate and provide performance feedback to field health educators to ensure quality-driven programming.
  • Contribute to creating outcomes focused management reports based on the identified business plan goals and objectives.
  • Represent HealthFitness in client sponsored events and activities as applicable.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion, Exercise Science, Kinesiology or related field.
  • Three or more years experience in delivery and coordination of corporate-based health promotion programs, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in the areas of data collection, data analysis, and outcomes reporting in regards to health risk and status.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification required
  • Experience instructing group exercise classes and recognized industry certification strongly preferred.
  • CHES certification a plus.

 Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated skill in program development, implementation, marketing and promotion.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, leadership and customer service skills including the ability to motivate others.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including at minimum Word, Excel and Outlook; PowerPoint and Access strongly preferred.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work demands.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team with enthusiasm, initiative and creativity.

Project: Girls Inc. MY Challenge! MY Choice!

MY Challenge! MY Choice! is a health and wellness program for girls ages 11-14. This program introduces girls to ideas, activities and information that will help them make better decisions about their fitness, nutrition, and sexual health practices and lead to their improved health and wellness for the long term. 

Salary: This is a grant-funded project with an hourly salary to be set through the grant process.

Hours: Program begins August 31, 2009 through the school year, with possibility of continuing into the summer. Program will run from 3:30pm until 6:30pm, Mondays-Thursdays.

Location: Ft. Davis Community Center, 1400 41st St., SE

Job Responsibilities:
 
·        Delivers the grant-funded project to girls as outlined in the proposal.
·        Delivers program with understanding of and respect for girl-centered needs.
·        Takes initiative when needed and shows enthusiasm for the project.
·        Demonstrates ability to motivate girls to engage actively in and successfully complete the program.
·        Plans activities and works effectively with contractors/facilitators, other service providers and site staff to ensure program activities meet project outcomes.
·        Attends all meetings, prepares reports and ensures that all project requirements are adhered to.
·        Communicates effectively with GI staff, community organization staff, site staff, children and parents.
·        Adheres to schedule for programming and deadlines for data collection, program evaluation and grant reporting.

Qualifications:
