Career Development Services

Office of Student Academic and Career Development Services
Ross Hall, Room 221

Welcome to the Career Services webpage. Our job is to help you plan your career and to master the skills that will move it in the direction that is right for you. Our services, which are available to undergraduate and graduate students and to alumni, include:

  • Critiquing your resume and cover letters
  • Helping you practice interviewing and networking through mock sessions
  • Training you in the techniques of self-marketing

We hope you will take full advantage of our services. Contact us to make an appointment for one-on-one consultations and watch for announcements of our workshops and other on-campus and off-campus events.

Other services offered by the Career Development office:

SPHHS Student Listserv

The SPHHS Listserv is our school's main communication link and information clearinghouse. Subscribe to the Listerv by emailing Robin Delk, sphrad@gwumc.edu; please use your gwu.edu email address. Once you sign up, you'll receive email notification of events, course registration information, and schedule changes.

The Listserv also alerts students to professional activities, including conferences, workshops and seminars. These offer great learning and networking opportunities, as well as a chance to fulfill your Professional Enhancement requirement. See the SPHHS Student Handbook and the Professional Enhancement Form for more information.

SPHHS Jobs Website

To create a new centralized resource for jobs, internships, and fellowships, and to cut down on Listserv traffic, the GW School of Public Health and Health Services launched a new jobs webpage in November 2006. The web address is: http://www.gwumc.edu/sphhs/studentres/careers/jobs/index.cfm. This new database is searchable by keyword as well as by free text (advanced search). Search terms can also identify full-time and part-time jobs, fellowships, and internships. The webpage is open to SPHHS students and alumni and also to the greater public health community. It will contain information about all job postings that are forwarded to the SPHHS Office of Student Academic and Career Development Services at sphhsjob@gwu.edu.

Here is a sampling of the most recently posted jobs:

Submit all Jobs to New Email Address

To submit a potential job, internship, or fellowship opportunity for posting on the new website, please should send a detailed email to sphhsjob@gwu.edu. Submissions will be reviewed and posted within 48 hours. Please do not post jobs directly to the SPHHS Listserv!!

GWork

GWork is a university-wide resource where full-time and part-time career positions for undergraduate and graduate students are posted and searchable. Create a GWork account at: http://gwired.gwu.edu/career/.

Alumni Informational Interviewing

Alumni Informational Interviewing connects you to GW graduates willing to answer questions about where they work, what they do and how they get there. Take advantage of the opportunity to interview alumni who are out there "doing" - this is a great chance to learn more about the many dimensions of public health. To participate, contact Mallory Boyd (see below).

Career Month

February is campuswide Career Month. SPHHS hosts annual job fair. This year the career fair will be on Friday, Feb 12 from 2-5pm.

Apply NOW! Calendar online calendar lists application deadlines for internships, fellowships and grants that are open to undergraduate and graduate students.
