What was best about the students at SPHHS when I was a student?

A high percentage of people had experience; they were willing to share their knowledge, which enriched the program.

What was best about living in the Washington, DC area?

There were so many interesting people from all over the US and the country. Many of them had strong beliefs in the greater public good.

My message to applicants:

You get as much from the program as you put into it.

What was best about the students at SPHHS when I was a student?

I returned to get my MPH as an older student working full time. I enjoyed working with other older students in the same position. We developed a rapport and method of supporting and helping one another that has resulted in friendships that have stood the test of distance and time.

What was best about living in the Washington, DC area?

When I first came to Washington in 1973 it was described as the biggest small town in America. I think that is an accurate characterization. We have opportunities to work directly with almost all government agencies, an incredible number of diverse non-profits, some of the most ethnically diverse restaurants in the nation and some of the best running and biking trails anywhere. I don't feel overwhelmed in DC like I do in New York City or Chicago.

My message to applicants:

GWU offers a wonderful opportunity to get a high quality education in public health in a wonderful city. The faculty is enthusiastic and involved. There are an incredible array of volunteer opportunities to explore various areas of public health. However, you also need to be aware that the program requires commitment beyond just going to class and completing the assignments. Most of the students I have met who were getting their MPH degrees while they figured out what they really wanted to do (e.g. get into medical school or law school) without a sense of commitment to public health were unhappy and dissatisfied.
