Student Funding Opportunities

This page describes funding opportunities that are available to students through SPHHS or GW.

The Capital Connection Fund

In celebration of the School's tenth anniversary, SPHHS and the Public Health Alumni Association have partnered to launch the Capital Connection Fund, which provides financial assistance for students to take advantage of off-campus research, internships, conferences and other professional development activities. The Fund enables students to pursue opportunities which they would otherwise not be able to afford, and to facilitate formative educational experiences beyond GW's walls. Contributions of alumni, faculty, and other friends of SPHHS support the Fund (see Make a Gift).

The Capital Connection Fund (CCF) supports four types of awards:

Capital Connection Scholars Awards - These awards, up to a maximum of $1000, support conference attendance for students and recent alumni whose abstracts have been accepted for presentation at professional conferences. The research presented must relate to a student's academic endeavors while attending SPHHS or to paid or unpaid research with an SPHHS faculty member.

Capital Connection Fieldwork Awards - These awards, up to a maximum of $1000, support travel expenses associated with practicum, culminating experience or similar academic fieldwork.

Capital Connection Research Awards - These awards, up to a maximum of $2500, support research activities (including travel) related to a student's academic program (culminating experience, independent study, dissertation, etc., but not practicum/internship).

Conference Registration "Mini-Awards" - These awards will support conference or workshop registration fees, up to a maximum of $150.

Applications will be solicited three times per year. Due dates are November 1st, March 1st, and June 15th. The Tauber Scholarship Fund

The Tauber Scholarship Fund was established by a donor in memory of victims of the Holocaust. Current SPHHS students who are direct descendants of U.S. veterans of World War II are eligible to apply. The family member must be either a student's parent, grandparent, or great grandparent. A call for applications, including detailed instructions and selection criteria, is sent out each November via the SPHHS Listserv. Approximately 9 awards of $6,000 each are made; the awards cover Spring tuition.

GWU Hospital (GWUH) Women's Board Scholars Program

Every year, the Women's Board supports a number of medical, nursing and public health students (among others) through scholarships. SPHHS students in good standing, who have been continuously employed at GWUH for at least one year prior to the application deadline AND who will be continuously employed at GWUH for at least one year upon selection, are eligible to apply. In late summer, a call for applications is distributed via the GWUH website, flyers around the Hospital, and via the SPHHS Listserv.

Columbian Women Scholarships

The Columbian Women Scholarship Award program enables the Columbian Women to present female GW students with scholarships based upon high levels of academic excellence, commitment to a chosen profession, and financial need. Award monies are applied toward GW tuition. Applicants must: be enrolled for the current academic year and be pursuing a degree in any field of study at GW; have completed a minimum of 15 credit hours for undergraduate work or 9 credit hours for graduate work; have a minimum grade point average of 3.5. The Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships

This GW office maintains information about a wide variety of University and non-University Fellowships for graduate students. Most of these awards require your fellowship application up to a full year before the funds are needed.

GW Center for Undergraduate Fellowships and Research

This center assists all GW undergraduates interested in pursuing national fellowships that recognize academic and extracurricular excellence. It also promotes the involvement of GW undergraduates in research experiences that allow them to learn firsthand, through interaction with faculty mentors and graduate students, how knowledge in their fields is generated.
