Optimization of a Scoring System for Near-Miss Morbidity

Brief Project Description

Lead investigator: Ayman El-Mohandes, MD
This project investigates analytic mechanisms that will help identify levels of risk in mothers during labor. Since maternal mortality is a very rare event in industrialized countries, research has expanded to the pre-moribund state to help identify women at the greatest risk for morbidity. Such identification allows medical resources to be allocated to women most likely to need it, and has the potential to influence referral practices for high-risk women, who need health care facilities with appropriate resources to meet potential challenges.

The project relies on the analysis of a data base that contains detailed pregnancy and delivery data on approximately 20,000 deliveries that have occurred at the George Washington University Medical Center over the past decade.
