Geographic Variation of End-Stage Renal Disease Incidence in Minority Populations

Brief Project Description

Sponsor: National Minority Health Month Foundation, Inc.
Principal Investigator: Sean D. Cleary, PhD, MPH
This project will undertake a small area analysis (SAA) of treated end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the United States with the intent of investigating whether SAA can be used as a tool to geographically identify communities with significant health disparities generally and a comparatively high prevalence of ESRD more specifically. To facilitate the identification of predominately minority areas with high and low incidence of treated end-stage renal disease, we used treated end-stage renal disease incidence counts for 1992 to 2001 linked to population data obtained from the 2000 U.S Census by zip code. The 10-year average age-adjusted incidence rates will be examined across minority and non-minority zip codes. SAA has value in identifying communities with high rates of ESRD. Future study may provide insights into the ability of SAA to localize other chronic diseases that disproportionately afflict minority communities.
