GWU - APHL Laboratory Training Institute

Brief Project Description

Sponsor: Association of Public Health Laboratories
Principal Investigator: Alan Greenberg, MD, MPH
Additional Faculty: Maria Elena Bottazzi, PhD, Rebecca Parkin, PhD, MPH
In 2006, the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, in collaboration with the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Tropical Medicine, led an initiative in which GW and the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) agreed to create the International Institute for Public Health Laboratory Management. The overall goal of the Institute is to provide training in the management and oversight of public health laboratories, initially for Laboratory Directors and Ministry of Health personnel from PEPFAR target countries, and subsequently for staff from other developing world countries and potentially from domestic laboratories as well. The first Institute seminar was held at GW for a two-week period in October 2007. National Laboratory Directors from Africa, Asia and South America participated in the Seminar. The faculty of this seminar was composed of US State Laboratory Directors from throughout the US, paired with GW faculty from both the School of Public Health and the School of Medicine. Plans are now under way to conduct further seminars in 2007.
