Wertlieb Educational Institute for Long-Term Care Management

Who We Are

The Wertlieb Educational Institute is a national resource for interdisciplinary education, dialogue and research in long-term care management. It offers students and working professionals the most current information available on best practices in long-term care in an environment that fosters learning and collaboration between academics and practitioners.

The Wertlieb Institute was launched in 1996 and is today an initiative of the Department of Health Services Management and Leadership. It was inspired, and initially supported, by long-term care administrator Harvey Wertlieb (GW BS'61, MBA'64) and his wife, Linda, who were committed to providing lifelong education for dynamic, results-oriented leaders prepared to meet the challenges of providing quality services to aging and disabled individuals.

What We Do

Through a broad array of educational offerings and practice opportunities, renowned faculty and industry professionals at the Wertlieb Institute provide training in all aspects of long-term care management, finance, policy and operations. The Institute offers concentrated coursework in long-term health care management, one of the few such programs in the country, as part of the School's fully accredited health administration masters degree program (MHSA). Students pursuing the MHSA or any other academic program offered within the Department of Health Services Management and Leadership can enroll in an array of SPHHS courses focused on long-term care and other public health issues, and they can draw on the academic resources of GW's Schools of Medicine; Law; and Business and Public Management. Their learning experiences are further enriched by access to the full resources of the many national and international organizations that are located in the nation's capital, and that are at the heart of the decisions that affect health care today. The Institute's extensive continuing education and distance learning opportunities, including conferences and seminars, are designed to increase the visibility, academic recognition and practitioner knowledge of long-term care.
