Prevention Research Center

Who We Are

The Prevention Research Center (PRC) was formed in 1996 as the scholarly home for many of the research activities in the Department of Prevention and Community Health. Its mission is to develop and evaluate innovative theoretical models and action strategies to promote health and prevent disease in diverse communities. To accomplish this, PRC scholars promote interdisciplinary collaboration and foster dynamic community partnerships, often working on externally funded projects with faculty from other departments within the SPHHS, as well as from other schools within The George Washington University. Many research opportunities are available to graduate students.

Areas of expertise among affiliated faculty researchers include:

  • Community development and planning
  • Needs assessment
  • Design and implementation of behavioral interventions
  • Behavioral science theory and methods
  • Evaluation research
  • Qualitative and quantitative data analysis
  • User-focused program evaluation

The Prevention Research Center currently has approximately $8 million in grants, cooperative agreements and contracts, with additional funding pending.

What We Do

The scholars of the Prevention Research Center, who represent an array of disciplines, conduct research in health promotion; sponsor training and symposia; and foster community collaboration and consortia. Much of the Center's research is conducted in collaboration with community agencies, state and local health departments, school systems and community clinics. Researchers are committed to extending and disseminating best practices in health promotion. Specifically, the Center:

  • Assesses populations at risk, with a special focus on the dynamics of the interactions among biological, psychosocial and behavioral risk variables that have an impact on health and disease.
  • Designs and implements innovative health and mental health interventions based on sound theoretical models and evidence-based practices in schools, worksites, clinic settings and community venues.
  • Analyzes complex interactions among variables using qualitative and quantitative methods and evaluates the efficacy of innovative strategies toward risk reduction and health enhancement; analyses are targeted at both individuals and communities. A special emphasis is examining the applicability of such strategies to existing health care, mental health, and social services.
  • Disseminates results of relevant research through training, symposia, seminars and advocacy in community, professional and policy arenas.
  • Expands the agenda for health promotion by involving relevant academic disciplines in research endeavors, including scholars from psychology, anthropology, education, sociology and public policy.
