Award Overview
Proposals for the GW HIV/AIDS Institute Research Awards are now being solicited. The deadline for proposals will be February 15, 2009. A total of $70,000 will be awarded. The start date for funded research projects will be July 1, 2009.
Award Objectives
This request for proposals will support innovative, high-impact basic, clinical, epidemiologic and behavioral feasibility studies in HIV/AIDS. Proposals that emphasize new multidisciplinary collaborations and collaborations between different institutions that will lead to funded peer-reviewed research will be given priority. Junior faculty investigators (instructor, research scientist, assistant professor or senior research scientist) who have not yet acquired HIV/AIDS Institute research funding will be given priority, especially if they work in collaboration with a well-established investigator from a participating Institution within the network of the GW HIV/AIDS Institute.
Eligibility Criteria
Proposals must focus on HIV/AIDS research.
The principal investigator must not have previously received HIV/AIDS Institute funding and must be a faculty member of the Institution participating in the HIV/AIDS Institute: School of Public Health and Health Services | George Washington University, GW SMHS, the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (CCAS), the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), Children's National Medical Center (CNMC), Georgetown University (GU), Howard University (HU) and the Washington Hospital Center (WHC). Women and minority investigators are encouraged to apply.
Mentoring of faculty new to the application process can be arranged through the HIV Institute and the Development Core Directors. Please contact Jennifer Skillicorn by January 15, 2009, if this is desired and an HIV Institute member from your institution will be identified who may assist.
At least one co-investigator must be included who is a faculty member of either the GW School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS) or the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS).

Curriculum vitae of participating faculty members.
Research proposal, not to exceed five pages, that includes the following sections: title, abstract, background, objectives, methodology, expected outcomes, and a statement of how the funding of this proposal could lead to a federal grant application. Appendices should include information about the study timeline, staffing, and budget justification.

Award Details
Awards between $5,000 and $40,000 will be considered. The number of awards made will depend on the number and quality of submissions and on the availability of funds.
Awards will be made for a one year period. No cost extensions may be considered.
Progress reports (3 pages including figures) will be expected every six months, and the awardee will present his/her final report at a seminar organized by GW HIV/AIDS Institute.
Awards can be used to support research-related activities such as junior faculty partial salary support, student salary support, supplies, and local travel.
Salary for regular, non-research, full-time faculty should be provided by the host-institution.
Inclusion of paid graduate student positions in study proposals is strongly encouraged.
Submission and Review of proposals
Proposals should be submitted electronically to the GW HIV/AIDS Institute Executive Coordinator, Ms Jennifer Skillicorn, at sphjls@gwumc.edu.
Proposals will be reviewed by the Executive Committee of the HIV/AIDS Institute or other senior Institute faculty members at the request of the Executive Committee. Proposals will be scored on a 100 point scale as follows:
60 points for the scientific merit of the proposal
20 points for innovative idea or approach
20 points for strength of plan regarding how the proposed study will lead to submission of a federal grant application
Following the proposal review process, recommendations about funding will be made by the Institute Co-Directors to the Vice President of the GW Medical Center, who in turn will make the final decisions about awards. Awards will be announced within one month of the submission deadline, with funds made available soon after the date of the announcement.
