Veterans Affairs Medical Center - Washington DC

The Infectious Disease Clinic at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington DC provides HIV care and Primary Care for approximately 950 patients with HIV Infection. Physicians include five VAMC/GWMC Infectious Diseases Faculty and a number of Infectious Diseases Specialists from VA Central Office, the Food and Drug Administration, GWMC, Infectious Disease Fellows and rotating residents. Two Nurse Practitioners, two nurses, a social worker, a nutritionist and administrative staff provide further patient support. Patients also receive care in the HIV Subspecialty Clinics of HIV-Neurology, HIV-Dermatology and HIV-Hepatology (where coinfected patients are evaluated for and provided treatment for Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C).

The ID Clinical Research Program is an important part of the care provided to patients. The DC VAMC is a study site for the NIH sponsored CPCRA, Community Program for Clinical Research on AIDS and the CDC sponsored TBTC, Tuberculosis Trials Consortium. Additionally, patients are evaluated for enrollment into NIH sponsored Interleukin - 2 studies, and other studies of HIV treatment and HIV- associated illnesses. Hospitalized patients with HIV are provided care by the Infectious Diseases Consultative Service.
