Clinical Care

Howard University Infectious Disease Clinic

The Infectious Disease Clinic at Howard University Hospital provides comprehensive care to patients infected with HIV conditions associated with AIDS. The approach to care emphasizes self-management using a chronic care model.

Professor and Chief of the Division of Infectious Disease, Dr. Vinod Mody, directs the HIV Division that provides services to approximately 350 HIV positive patients. The clinic has been existed since the 1980's when the epidemic began. With the advent of routine screening throughout the hospital, their patient load is increasing incrementally. Cases are becoming more challenging to treat as they see more patients with co-morbidities. With a team comprised of three attendings, two fellows, nurses, pharmacist, psychologists, social workers, and other support staff, the Division is able to provide quality care to persons living with HIV. Additionally, various research protocals are underway in an effort to seek to improve patient care and treatment. The clinic serves as a learning site for rotating residents and students. Patient education and community outreach efforts also help to prevent and slow HIV transmission. Dr. Mody and Dr. Farhat are in the process of starting a clinical trail with Dr. Gary Simon, Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at GW, involving HIV patients.
