Clinical Care

George Washington University Medical Center

The Division of Infectious Diseases provides clinical care to more than 800 HIV-infected individuals in the outpatient setting. Many of these patients are enrolled in a variety of clinical research protocols which include the study of new antiretroviral agents, immunomodulators, new treatment regimens, experimental vaccines as well as studies of the metabolic effects of HIV infection and its treatment. These patients participate in epidemiological studies and, for collaborative studies with basic science investigators, provide whole blood and plasma samples. In order to facilitate these research studies, the infectious disease clinics are located in direct proximity with the clinical trials unit of the Medical Faculty Associates, the clinical arm of the George Washington University School of Medicine. In addition to these outpatient activities, consultative services are provided routinely to HIV-infected persons hospitalized at the George Washington University Hospital.
