Current HIV/AIDS Research Activities:

  • In the late 1970s Dr. Levine was a consultant to the National Cancer Institute assisting on the establishment of the Viral Epidemiology Branch's AIDS-Cancer match which has now extended to more than 15 states. He is now working on implementing this match in the District of Columbia. His experience with this program led to a grant from the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control matching state cancer registries with files of Gulf War era veterans to investigate patterns of cancer in those deployed to the Persian Gulf vs. non-Gulf controls.
  • Dr. Levine is now developing a project to study the high incidence of four malignancies in young Black males in DC focusing first on Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Kaposi's sarcoma in a study of the extent to which undiagnosed and untreated HIV infection plays a role in producing this pattern. This study will also extend to young women with cervical cancer since this is an AIDS-defining malignancy and also has a high incidence in DC.

Professor Levine had long expected to pursue a career in internal medicine, but he first signed on for a six-year tour with the Public Health Services at the National Cancer Institute and that somehow morphed into a 30-year stint as a Commissioned Officer. When he retired in 1995, Dr. Levine was senior clinical investigator of the NCI's Viral Epidemiology Branch and he continues to hold a guest worker appointment in the Institute's Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics.

Dr. Levine's long-standing ties to some of the nation's top researchers provide a steady flow of guest lecturers into his classroom, and generate numerous research opportunities for his students. Since his 1995 move to George Washington University Professor Levine has become increasingly involved in mentoring MPH, PhD and medical students, especially those involved with cancer-related research. He is co-director of Cancer Prevention and Control of the GW Cancer Institute.
