Current HIV/AIDS Clinical Activities:
- Attending physician in the ID clinic at the VAMC for the past 18 years. The clinic provides ongoing primary care to approximately 1,000 HIV infected veterans. Was Director of this clinic from 1992 to 2001.
Current HIV/AIDS Research Activities:
- Site Principal Investigator for the Veterans Aging Cohort Study, an NIH-NIAAA funded study following clinical outcomes in over 3200 HIV-infected veterans and 3200 non-HIV-infected veterans at 8 VA sites.
- Site Principal Investigator for the Fat Redistribution and Metabolic Change in HIV (FRAM 1 and FRAM 2), NIH-NIDDK funded studies of metabolic and body composition changes in HIV-infected patients.
- Site Principal Investigator for the OPTIMA Trial, a VA cooperative study to determine the optima management of patients with HIV infection for whom first and second-line highly active antiretroviral therapy has failed.
- Site investigator for CPCRA/Insight, National Protocol Team Member of the Metabolic substudy of Flexible Initial Retrovirus Suppressive Therapies (FIRST) sutdy and of the Metabolic substudy of the strategic management of antiretroviral therapy (SMART) study.
Current HIV/AIDS Service Activities:
- Member of the VA National HIV Treatment Advisory Group
- Current president of the Veterans Affairs Society for Practitioners
of Infectious Diseases, which represents VA ID physicians at the 154 VA
hospitals throughout the US
