  • Provide direct care to patients with HIV/AIDS at Infectious Disease Clinic, Howard University Hospital
  • Inpatient consultation for HIV/AIDS patients at Howard University Hospital

Current HIV/AIDS Research Activities:

  • Host Biological and Virologic predictors of HIV Disease Progression and Response to Therapy - Prospective study in progress.
  • HIV Associated Nephropathy in African American population in an inner city teaching hospital: Influence of age, gender and risk factorson end stage renal disease. Accepted for poster presentation at International AIDS Conference, Mexico, August 2008.
  • Antiretroviral drug resistance - Mutations and resistance to antiretrovirals among patients with newly diagnosed HIV. Accepted for poster presentation at International AIDS Conference, Mexico, August 2008.

Current HIV/AIDS Service Activities:

  • Member Infection control and Antibiotic subcommittee at Howard University Hospital.

Dr. Faria Farhat is a licensed physician and Board-certified Infectious Diseases specialist. She completed her medical residency at Howard University Hospital, and currently she is working there as an Assistant Professor in College of Medicine. Dr. Farhat has had a long term interest in HIV/AIDS, antibiotics, and tropical diseases. She was awarded Certificate of Achievement for scholarly activity by Howard University Hospital in June, 2005, and presented abstracts at many local and National Conferences. Dr. Farhat has also received awards for her work from the American College of Physicians and Southern Medical Association.

She has been actively involved in providing medical care to patients with HIV. She is interested in finding ways to improve clinical care of minority patients infected with HIV. Her research interests include Anti retro viral agents, Mycobacterial infections, Kidney disease, cardiovascular disease and mental health in HIV patients. Dr. Farhat is involved in many HIV/AIDS related research projects and is collaborating in intra-university clinical trials. She also has a passion for teaching and training which led to her role as Clinical Director of National Minority AIDS Education and Training Center.

Working with Eurasian Medical Education Program of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Farhat helped Russian physicians develop curriculum for "Management of Opportunistic Infections in HIV Patients" at Far Eastern State Medical University, Khabarovsk, Russia. This program was funded by USAID.

Her future goal is to become more involved in larger clinical HIV/AIDS trials to better serve the clinical needs of these complex minority patients and teach other clinicians as well about the best clinical practices.
