GW Center for Global Health

Who We Are

The George Washington Center for Global Health carries out innovative research and scholarly service activities to meet the evolving challenges of the 21st century global health and development environment. Working with a diverse group of partners, the Center aims to strengthen the link between science and policy and to improve responses to critical health issues around the world.

The Center maintains four specific objectives in the pursuit of its mission:

  • Advance learning through scholarly service and collaboration;
  • Strengthen the linkages between science and policy development;
  • Strengthen the linkages between science and global health practice; and
  • Contribute to the policy and research dialogue on global health priorities

The Center is affiliated with the Department of Global Health and works closely with other departments in the School of Public Health and Health Services, the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the Elliott School of International Affairs, among others. In addition, the Center enjoys collaborative relationships with a broad array of private, governmental, non-governmental, and international agencies that are actively involved in global health and development issues.

What We Do

The Center for Global Health brings a wealth of experience to global health and development research and practice. The Center is committed to developing and applying practical approaches to build sustainable capacity for leadership in health and development, reduce health disparities, and strengthen health systems and services.

Center Staff and Global Health Service Fellows provide technical support and implement projects in the following areas:

  • Scholarly Service: The Center awards Global Health Service Fellowships (GHSF) to select MPH candidates from the Global Health department every semester. Fellowships are intended to recognize academic achievement and service in the Department of Global Health and provide financial support to service-oriented practicum experiences with one of the Center's partner institutions. Service projects currently address Child Health, Hunger and HIV/AIDS in East Africa; Community Health Programming in South Asia; Health and Nutrition Surveillance and Evaluation Strengthening in Latin America and the Caribbean; and Global Health Governance Monitoring of the executive boards of international organizations with major roles in global health

  • Research and Policy Building: The Center is engaged in the support and implementation of research and policy building activities in the following areas:

    • Nutrition and food policy intervention programming
    • Health communications and social marketing
    • International organization governance and resource tracking
    • Child health, HIV and reproductive health
    • Infectious disease epidemiology
    • Vector control biology and urban health


    In addition, faculty advises and collaborates with numerous international health and development stakeholders on research programs, including: The Organization of American States: the Institute of Medicine; UNICEF; the Center for Strategic and International Studies; UNAIDS; the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria; and the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars.

The Center also sponsors a number of events that bring key scholars and health professionals to the university to talk about critical global health issues. Annual events include the Global AIDS Roundtable Series and the Global Hunger Summit.
