Professor Westerman has been affiliated with GW for two decades in the capacities of clinician, educator and student. As head athletic trainer of its Athletic Department, she coordinated all aspects of health care for the university's athletes. While working in that role, and teaching as an adjunct faculty member, Dr. Westerman also pursued a doctorate degree, which she completed in 1999, shortly before being appointed to the School's faculty. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Westerman is Director of the Athletic Training Education Programs at the School.

An active member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA), Dr. Westerman serves on its entry-level education committees and was host committee chair for the 2004 annual meeting and symposium. She earned NATA's Athletic Training Service Award in 2004.

Research

In addition to developing curricula for athletic training, Dr. Westerman's research has focused on burnout, stress management and coping interventions among athletic training professionals.

Community Service

Professor Westerman is trained in first aid and CPR, and serves as an American Red Cross volunteer instructor and a member of Arlington County's Community Emergency Response Team. Passionate about disaster animal rescue, she is also a volunteer coordinator for Noah's Wish, which rescues and shelters domestic pets and livestock after a large-scale domestic or international disaster.
