JoEllen Vrazel, PhD, MA

For more than a decade, Professor Vrazel coached NCAA Division 1 women's volleyball, a natural evolution from her long athletic career as collegiate, national and international volleyball player. After deciding to refocus her professional pursuits on public health, she completed her doctorate, writing her dissertation on the middle-age exercise experience for women. "My interest in sports, exercise and fitness shifted from a performance-related focus to one of wellness through the promotion of physical activity to prevent and treat disease," says Dr. Vrazel, who joined the School's faculty in 2005. "I hope my combined experiences and my enthusiasm for promoting a lifetime of physical activity will provide a unique perspective to students."

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Vrazel is Director of the Sports Activities Program, which offers more than 80 classes to all students every semester. Along with traditional sports such as basketball, volleyball and swimming, the program offers aerobics, mat pilates, yoga, foil fencing, Japanese swordsmanship, sports massage, weightlifting and much more.
