Alexandra Stewart is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Health Policy.

Alexandra Stewart, JD

A researcher with extensive experience managing projects, developing analysis instruments and creating databases, Professor Stewart is an expert in immunization policy and law. She is Director of the Department's Epidemiology of U.S. Immunization Law project, a CDC-supported initiative that conducts research and provides technical assistance to improve standards for immunization coverage and performance in children and adults. This project produced the largest single legal analysis of immunization policy ever undertaken and contributed to the development of essential tools for public health practice and policy. Professor Stewart has also drafted a number of model statutes related to immunization.

Professor Stewart has also reviewed issues related to the community integration of individuals with disabilities and analyzed civil rights complaints for the Office of Civil Rights at the Department of Health and Human Services. Prior to coming to GW in 1999, Professor Stewart was a law clerk for the Legal Ethics Committee of the District of Columbia Bar.

Research

Professor Stewart's has two primary research interests: 1) the intersection of immunization law and policy, and how law can support public health goals related to vaccination; and 2) the community integration of persons with disabilities and the Supreme Court decision, Olmstead v. L.C, which interpreted the Americans with Disabilities Act.
