An innovative leader in the global health community, Dr. James Sherry became Chair of the Department of Global Health in 2006. As a senior United Nations official, Dr. Sherry brings extensive program, policy, political, governance and institutional development experiences to his new position. Prior to joining the School, Dr. Sherry was based at the World Food Program in Rome, where he focused on child hunger. He also served as the Global Health Council's vice president of policy, research and advocacy. At UNAIDS, where he spent almost a decade, Dr. Sherry was Director of Programme Development and Coordination and Senior Advisor to the Executive Director. Previously, he held the positions of Chief of Health, Chief of Health Promotion and Senior Advisor for Programme Strategy at UNICEF. He has also been a U.S. Foreign Service Officer in India, where he directed the Office of Biomedical Research and Technology Development, and chief of staff for Congressman Sander M. Levin.
