Brandy Rutledge, PhD

Brandy Nicole Rutledge is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

Brandy Rutledge, PhD

With her longstanding interest in statistics and its application to the medical field, Professor Rutledge has found a natural home at The Biostatistics Center, where she is expanding her understanding of statistical concepts, developing new methodologies and working with medical collaborators to interpret data that can be applied to advance knowledge and treatment of disease. "A continual longing to learn and to share what I have learned with others is the theme of my career," she says. Dr. Rutledge was the recipent of a Gates Millennium Scholarship for her graduate studies.

Dr. Rutledge is currently conducting research for the Epidemiology of Diabetes Intervention and Complications (EDIC), a multicenter longitudinal trial that has been underway since 1994 and has submitted a number of journal articles for publication. Among her ongoing work, she is looking at the issue of sexual dysfunction among men and women with Type 1 diabetes; studying the incidence of urinary tract infections and urinary incontinence in this population; and assessing the effect of diabetes treatment on a number of medical conditions.

Education

Bachelor of Science (Applied Mathmatics), Norfold State University, 1999
Doctor of Philosophy (Biostatistics), Virginia Commonwealth University, 2004

Research

Professor Rutledge is engaged in developing state-of-the-art statistical methodology to aid in analyzing data from clinical trials and epidemiological studies on Type 1 diabetes and its complications. She is also interested in analyzing twin studies to determine whether disease variability can be explained by genetic or environmental effects, or some combination.

Community Activities

Professor Rutledge participates actively in the Gates Millennium Scholarship Alumni Network. She is also working to create a network of alumni who graduated from the Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics and Applied Sciences Scholarship Program at Norfolk State, which provides support to minority candidates pursuing doctoral degrees in science and mathematics.
