Madeline Rice, PhD, MS

Madeline Murguia Rice is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.

Madeline Rice, PhD, MS

Professor Rice was a doctoral student at the University of Washington when she collaborated on her first cohort study, designed to measure the prevalence, incidence and risk factors for dementia among older Japanese Americans; she has been interested in the methodological challenges of studying older populations ever since. Dr. Rice's research interests now include the two extremes of the life span. She is currently the Principal Investigator and Director of the Clinical and Statistical Coordinating Center of Prevention of Events with Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibition, an NIH–sponsored clinical trial in patients with existing heart disease. She is also a Co–Investigator of the Biostatistics Coordinating Center for the Maternal Fetal Medicine Units Network (MFMU), an NIH–sponsored network that is designed to focus on clinical questions in maternal–fetal medicine and obstetrics. Dr. Rice joined the SPHHS in 2001, and was appointed to The Biostatistics Center faculty in 2002.

A dedicated teacher, Dr. Rice emphasizes public speaking in her classroom in order to help students develop the skills to make presentations, and she encourages students to submit their manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals where appropriate. "An important goal of my teaching is to be a learner as well as a teacher," she says. "I take student feedback to heart and use that input to strengthen my courses and improve the mentoring process. I appreciate learning about new approaches from my students."
