Sarah Orndorff is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Health.

Trained as a medical anthropologist, Dr. Orndorff's particular areas of interest include infant mortality and reproductive health, including the "politics of reproduction," and gender studies. She began teaching at SPHHS in the spring of 2006, having previously taught cultural anthropology and gender-related topics at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and medical anthropology at the State University of New York at Purchase.

Professor Orndorff is currently engaged in a number of research projects related to health disparities for the Washington, DC Department of Health's Center for Policy, Planning and Epidemiology. These include strategizing on the development of a Center of Excellence in Eliminating Disparities, assessing Latino health in Washington, DC, analyzing data related to infant mortality and to hypertension-related mortality.

With a background in academic institutional research, Dr. Orndorff is also uniquely qualified for her responsibilities as DataMart representative to the Department of Global Health, where she provides data on student demographics and academic activities.

Research

Dr. Orndorff's dissertation focused on public health policy as it relates to infant mortality and will be published by Lexington Press. She continues to pursue her work in the area of infant mortality, and is also researching intimate partner violence as a global health concern, working in partnership with an Albanian colleague.

Community Service

Dr. Orndorff is a member of the GWU Research Committee and participates in the Health Disparities Coalition and the Health Disparities Advisory Committee of the Washington, DC Department of Health. She has also been affiliated with the American Anthropological Association since 1996, and is active in two of its subsidiaries, the Society for Medical Anthropology and the Council on Anthropology and Reproduction, which she chairs.
