Wayne C. Miller is a Professor in the Department of Exercise Science at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.

Wayne Miller, PhD, MS

Long before there was a national awareness of obesity, Professor Miller was interested in strategies for managing weight effectively through diet composition and activity, rather than through caloric restriction. Since completing his postdoctoral research fellowship on the regulation of lipid metabolism and obesity at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1987, he has helped to develop or shape a number of weight-loss programs, including the Non-Diet Diet Centers. In the Department of Exercise Science, where he has been a faculty member since 1995, Dr. Miller serves as Director of the Healthy Weight Management Programs. Dr. Miller also directs the Exercise, Nutrition, and Eating Disorders concentration of the M.S. degree in Exercise Science.

Research

Dr. Miller studies metabolism as it relates to exercise and eating behavior, as well as attitudinal and lifestyle influences on activity. His recent research includes a quantitative analysis of American attitudes and perceptions toward commercial health club membership; a study of the effects of fasted-state exercise on performance; an exploration of the link between obesity and the amount of time adolescents spend alone; a comparison of excess post-exercise oxygen consumption of obese and lean adults; and an investigation into the metabolic adaptations that occur in anorexia.

As well, he is treasurer for the International Society of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity and a fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine and the North American Society for the Study of Obesity. Professor Miller has served on grant review panels for the USDA and the NIH, helping to make funding decisions about human nutrition, physical activity and obesity research, and as conference coordinator for the annual meeting of the International Society of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.
