
Larry F. Hamm is Professor and Director of the Exercise Physiology Program in the Department of Exercise Science at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.
With more than three decades of experience in the field of cardiac rehabilitation and clinical exercise physiology, Professor Hamm brings a breadth of clinical knowledge and administrative expertise into the classroom. "My clinical experiences have provided me with the knowledge of the skills and abilities that are valued by the employer of clinical exercise physiologists," he says. "I try to emphasize these practical aspects in my teaching in order to prepare students to be contributing members of health care teams." After many years directing hospital-based, community-based and office-based cardiac rehabilitation programs in Minnesota, Toronto, and Washington, DC, Dr. Hamm re-joined the SPHHS faculty on a full-time basis in 2007. He initially joined the faculty in a full-time capacity in 2000, and soon after earned the Department's Excellence in Teaching Award. From 2004 -2007, Dr. Hamm became an Adjunct Professor while holding a joint appointment at National Rehabilitation Hospital and Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. His appointment at Washington Hospital Center was as Program Director of the Washington Heart Medical Fitness and Wellness Center and he was also a Senior Research Scientist in the Christoph Reusch Neuroscience Research Center at the National Rehabilitation Hospital. During that period of time, Dr. Hamm also held an appointment at Georgetown University, where he was Associate Professor of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine at the Medical Center.

In the area of cardiovascular disease, Dr. Hamm is interested in cardiac rehabilitation program models, outcomes and clinical exercise testing. He has also conducted research related to exercise testing, physical activity and cardiovascular risk reduction in individuals with spinal cord injury.
Professor Hamm is a Fellow of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR), on whose board he sits. He was the President of AACVPR in 2007-2008 and is currently involved in many association activities at the national level. Dr. Hamm is also a Fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine, where he has served on several national committees, including the Committee on Certification and Registry Boards.
In September 2011, Dr. Hamm was awarded with the 2011 Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) for his ideas, commitment, and leadership that have significantly benefited AACVPR.
