James M Sherry, M.D., Ph.D.

James M. Sherry, MD, PhD is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Global Health.

An innovative leader in the global health community, Dr. James Sherry became Chair of the Department of Global Health in 2006. As a senior United Nations official, Dr. Sherry brings extensive program, policy, political, governance and institutional development experiences to his new position. In high-level executive appointments at UNICEF and UNAIDS, he:

  • Influenced the global response to HIV and other infectious diseases, women's health, vaccine development and more;
  • Engaged with political and policymaking actors at the highest levels around the world; and
  • Guided technical support missions to some 25 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.
Prior to joining the School, Dr. Sherry was based at the World Food Program in Rome, where he focused on child hunger. He also served as the Global Health Council's vice president of policy, research and advocacy. At UNAIDS, where he spent almost a decade, Dr. Sherry was Director of Programme Development and Coordination and Senior Advisor to the Executive Director. Previously, he held the positions of Chief of Health, Chief of Health Promotion and Senior Advisor for Programme Strategy at UNICEF. He has also been a U.S. Foreign Service Officer in India, where he directed the Office of Biomedical Research and Technology Development, and chief of staff for Congressman Sander M. Levin.

Dr. Sherry is a member of the Institute of Medicine's PEPFAR Evaluation Committee and a member of the Global Health Resource Tracking Working Group of the Center for Global Development. As well, he has served in various voluntary capacities at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and at the World Health Organization's Global Commission on Women's Health.
