Daniel A. Hoffman is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the Department of Global Health at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.

In a long career that has blended research, public service and a commitment to training a new generation of public health professionals, Professor Hoffman has pursued interests in environmental hazards, cancer epidemiology and leadership capacity–building. He helped to guide SPHHS into formation, and was appointed the School's first Associate Dean for Public Health; from 2001-03, he served as Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Research.

Dr. Hoffman currently directs the School's Eastern and Central European Health Leadership Program, funded by USAID, which trains mid–level health professionals in management strategies appropriate to countries making the transition from a state-run health care system towards one financed with a mix of private and public funds. He is also co–Director of the new Master of Science program in Public Health Microbiology and Emerging Infectious Diseases, a joint program offered with GW's School of Medicine. Prior to joining the GW faculty in 1994, Dr. Hoffman was Associate Director for Science at the National Center for Environmental Health and Injury Control at the CDC. From 1969-92 he was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, retiring as Captain and Scientist Director.

Research

Dr. Hoffman's current research interests include environmental determinants of cancer; public health syndromic surveillance; building training capacity for the staff of National Disaster Medical System Hospitals; and building health leadership capacity in Eastern and Central Europe. In collaboration with the Russian Ministry of Health and the U.S. Department of Energy, he has conducted research on the health effects of environmental exposure in Russia, and has also studied the Chernobyl disaster in the Ukraine. Community Service

Professor Hoffman is a member of the Steering Committee for the Community Environmental Health Assessment for Alexandria, Virginia and a member of the IRB of the Health and Research Initiatives of the Special Olympics. Other service activities have involved the National Cancer Institute, the National Institutes of Health, Mid-Atlantic Health Leadership Institute, the Association of Schools of Public Health and many others.
