Larry Hamm, PhD

Larry F. Hamm is Professor and Director of the Exercise Physiology Concentration in the Department of Exercise Science at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.

With more than three decades of experience in the field of cardiac rehabilitation and clinical exercise physiology, Professor Hamm brings a breadth of clinical knowledge and administrative expertise into the classroom. "My experiences have provided me with the knowledge, skills and abilities that are valued by the employer of clinical exercise physiologists," he says. "I try to emphasize these practical aspects in my teaching in order to prepare students for future employment."

After many years directing hospital-based, community-based and office-based cardiac rehabilitation programs in Minnesota, Toronto, and Washington, DC, Dr. Hamm re-joined the SPHHS faculty on a full-time basis in 2007. He initially joined the faculty in a full-time capacity in 2000, and soon after earned the Department's Excellence in Teaching Award. From 2004 -2007, Dr. Hamm became an Adjunct Professor while holding a joint appointment at National Rehabilitation Hospital and Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. His appointment at Washington Hospital Center was as Program Director of the Washington Heart Medical Fitness and Wellness Center and he was also a Senior Research Scientist in the Christoph Reusch Neuroscience Research Center at the National Rehabilitation Hospital. During that period of time, Dr. Hamm also held an appointment at Georgetown University, where he was Associate Professor of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine at the Medical Center.

Research

In the area of cardiovascular disease, Dr. Hamm is interested in cardiac rehabilitation program models, outcomes and clinical exercise testing. He has also researched applications of exercise testing, physical activity and cardiovascular risk reduction to individuals with spinal cord injury.

Community Service

Professor Hamm is a Fellow of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, on whose board he sits. He was the President of this national association in 2007-2008 and is currently involved in many association activities at the national level. Dr. Hamm is also a Fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine, where he has served on several national committees, including the Committee on Certification and Registry Boards and is also a Fellow of the Society of Geriatric Cardiology
