Mary A. Foulkes, PhDMary A. Foulkes is Research Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and also in the Department of Health Policy.
In a career that has included stints in academic, private industry, and government settings, Professor Foulkes has collaborated on numerous randomized, controlled clinical trials, especially in cardiovascular disease, infectious diseases, neurological disorders, oncologic therapies, and disease prevention. Her rigorous work has included designing, overseeing, monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on those trials; organizing scientific conferences; and serving on the Data Monitoring Committees of clinical trials sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, the UK Medical Research Council, and the Veterans Administration. Professor Foulkes is also associate editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Prior to joining SPHHS in 2007, Professor Foulkes was director of the Office of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. Previously, she also served as chief of the Biostatistics Research Branch, in the Division of AIDS at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Widely honored, Professor Foulkes has received the FDA Commissioner's Special Citation Award for Anthrax Vaccine Final Order and the DHHS Secretary's Award for Distinguished Service for Patient Safety. As well, she was twice honored with the NIH Director's Award, recognizing her work on statistical methods applied to outcome studies in stroke and traumatic head injury, and for advancing HIV therapeutic trials. Dr. Foulkes is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the American Statistical Association (ASA).
