As a post-doctoral trainee in bioinformatics and biostatistics at Texas A&M University, Professor Drews worked with a group of cancer biologists to examine the links between diet and colorectal cancer. Along with the opportunity to develop her statistical skills, that experience taught her to thrive in a team-centered collaborative environment. Recognizing the benefits, she sought similar when she was on the job market again and found it at the SPHHS-affiliated Biostatistics Center, where she is currently involved with a multi-center trial focused on diabetes.

Prior to joining SPHHS in 2005, Professor Drews was an instructor at Texas Tech University. As she pursues scholarship at a new institution, she maintains a strong commitment to working in a multidisciplinary environment. "I feel that the work I do makes a contribution to the scientific world and I get real satisfaction when I see all of the pieces come together," she says.

Education

Bachelor of Science (Mathematics), University of Southern Mississippi, 1993
Master of Science (Mathematics), University of Southern Mississippi, 1995
Doctor of Philosophy (Mathematics, with statistics emphasis), Texas Tech University, 2002

Research

Dr. Drews is co-investigator for a phase 2 multi-center trial investigating minimally invasive surgical techniques for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Her statistical interests include missing data, repeated measures and longitudinal data, nonparametric statistics and mixed models. Her poster on dietary fiber and colon cancer was the winning presentation at the 2004 annual scientific symposium for the Center for Environmental and Rural Health.

Community Service

Professor Drews is a member of the American Statistical Association and the International Biometric Society, serving as local arrangements chair for the Eastern North American Region of the International Biometrics Society (ENAR/IBS) in 2007-2008. She is currently on the Regional Advisory Board for ENAR/IBS and on the Program Committee for the 2010 ENAR/IBS annual meeting.
