Victor Barbiero, PhD, MHSVictor Barbiero is a Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Global Health at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.
Contact Professor Barbiero at: Professor Barbiero's commitment to international health began shortly after his graduation from college, when he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ethiopia, and it has continued for three decades. Until his retirement in 2005, Dr. Barbiero was Chief of the Implementation Support Division in the U.S. Agency for International Development's Office of HIV/AIDS, where was responsible for setting the technical and operational vision necessary to meet the agency's goals for HIV treatment, prevention and care. In that capacity, he was a liaison to government health agencies, to the donor community and to nongovernmental organizations. Earlier assignments for USAID have taken him around the globe. In India, he directed USAID's Population, Health and Nutrition Program, and in East Africa he managed numerous initiatives designed to strengthen the health sector and food assistance programs, improve coordination with government and donor communities and promote effective ties between the NGO community and the public sector. Dr. Barbiero has also served as chief of USAID's Child Survival Division, where he provided strategic input to major technical efforts on childhood illness, micronutrient sufficiency and applied research. He has earned USAID's Meritorious Honor Award three times. Education
