Culture: an Instrument for Health?

department: SPHHS
when: Tuesday, 07/31/2007 (2:00 PM - 4:00 PM)
where: 525 Twenty-Third Street N.W., Washington DC (Room B)
details: The Pan-American Health Organization cordially invites you to a panel
discussion concentrating on the rapidly growing use of traditional and
complementary medicine (TM/CAM), entitled *Culture: an Instrument for
Health?,* to take place Tuesday, July 31st at PAHO headquarters, 525
Twenty-Third Street N.W., Washington DC (Room B) from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

The panel will address challenges surrounding the increasing need for
cultural competency within health systems. Cultural differences are
proving to be some of the most stubborn obstacles to improved health all
over the hemisphere, from the US-Mexico border and the Canadian arctic
to the rainforests of Brazil. In consequence, international
organizations and ministries of health all over the world are attempting
to create health systems in which health and culture work together.

Our distinguished panelists, from the National Institutes of Health,
Georgetown University, Brazil*s Ministry of Health and Toronto Western
Hospital, Canada, will discuss the importance of cultural competency in
responding to the needs of diverse populations, integration of
traditional medical practices into modern health systems, the
experiences of health ministries that have successfully crossed cultural
divides, and the safety and effectiveness of traditional medicine.

Hoping to do more than just talk about the issue, we have
arranged a fundraising lunch preceding the panel, and starting at noon
to benefit ServeHaiti, a non-profit agency that works to bring Western
medical care to the impoverished mountain population of Haiti.
Cooperating with inhabitants to carry out sensitive and respectful
interventions, in 2003 ServeHAITI was selected to receive one of the
first grants as part of the President*s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief
(PEPFAR).

We hope the discussion will contribute to cooperation and collaboration
between organizations, as well as create a forum for discussion,
analysis, and critics. Please RSVP your attendance to Rebecca Barasky at
baraskyr@paho.org by July 27th.
