Our Degree Programs

We offer two degree programs in Public Health Communication and Marketing: a 45-credit Master of Public Health (MPH) that generally takes about two years to finish, and an 18-credit Graduate Certificate, which can either be completed on its own or combined with an MPH in a different program or department.

Program Overview

MPH in Public Health Communication & Marketing

Our MPH program was created in response to several important insights:

  • There is a rapidly growing need for public health professionals specifically trained in communication and marketing.
  • Communication and marketing are distinct activities, and both are important for advancing the public's health.
  • Effectively addressing today's public health problems requires public health professionals to be equally competent at creating programs that influence people and their environments.
  • Students want, and employers want students to have, as much practical experience as possible during their MPH training so that they can "hit the ground running" when hired upon graduation.

We turned these insights into what we believe is a unique MPH program, ideally suited to the public health challenges of the 21st century. Through coursework in topics like market research, health advocacy, school health promotion, and social marketing, as well as the core public health competencies, our graduates become equally competent at communication and marketing.

Even in introductory courses, we emphasize the application of ideas, allowing students learn to use their new skills to influence people and places to promote improved health. We are confident that we've developed an innovative curriculum that will prepare our students to be highly valued members of any public health team, and to eventually become leaders in the field.

Graduate Certificate in Public Health Communication & Marketing

Our 18 credit hour graduate certificate program was created primarily for people currently working in the field of public health who are seeking advanced training in communication and marketing, and for graduate students in public health and other related disciplines who see value in adding an additional facet to their current training program. This certificate program is intended to be highly flexible, allowing students to take the courses which best support their intellectual interests and professional objectives. A minimum of 9 of these credit hours, however, must be selected from our core public health communication and marketing courses.

We are interested in offering the graduate certificate program to public health organizations seeking to improve the communication and marketing skills of their employees. If this is of potential interest to your organization, please don't hesitate to contact us.
