History and Legacy

The purpose of this site is to maintain a living history of the GW Health Services Management and Leadership Program (HSML) and its alumni since the first graduating class of 1962 by:

  • Preserving the GW healthcare administration program legacy by video and audio interviews with program graduates, creating a living history,
  • Connecting current students and future graduates of the program with the rich history of the GWU HSML program,
  • Enriching the learning experience for today's students by providing access to prior graduates in order to foster an appreciation for former industry leaders who have began their careers in the GWU HSML program,
  • Acknowledging the number of senior executives who have been elected to national healthcare leadership positions whose roots are in the GWU program,
  • Creating an understanding of how former successful executives and industry leaders achieved their success, offering current students and future graduates the advantage of "looking in the rearview mirror" of history and evolution of modern healthcare administration through the eyes of the senior individuals who actually experienced the events and in contributed a positive impact to the system,
  • Identifying principles of success by developing an appreciation for individuals from generations who have been successful in recognized as industry leaders,
  • Appreciating and extrapolating the issues facing young healthcare professionals from those who have gone before, and
  • Creating an electronic interface and repository for the program's historical files.

Dr. Phillip N. Reeves
Phillip N. Reeves was born on October 26, 1926 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Chicago in 1959 and his Doctor of Business Administration from The George Washington University in 1970. He was a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force from 1945 to 1967. His work at GW included: Associate Professor in the Department of Health Services Administration from 1969 until 1974; Associate Director of the CHP Council of Northern Virginia, 1974; and Professor in the Health Services Administration, 1975 to 1979. He served as professor and Chairman from 1979 to 1982.

Jack Buckley, FACHE
Jack Buckley, FACHE, serves as Principal of Jack Buckley and Associates, College Station, Texas, an independent consultancy to healthcare leaders focusing on community economic development, advocacy and the provision of integrated services. Mr. Buckley has more than 40 years of experience in health care leadership and has worked for a number of Catholic and other not-for-profit hospitals and health systems. He has held leadership positions with the St. Joseph Health System, Bryan, TX; Mercy Health System, Cincinnati, OH; St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center, Phoenix, AZ; St. Mary's Hospital, East St. Louis, IL; St. Joseph Hospital, Wichita, KS; St. Anthony's in Amarillo, TX; and Southern Illinois Healthcare Enterprises, Carbondale, IL. Mr. Buckley received an MBA from The George Washington University, Washington, DC and a AB from Kenyon College, Gambier, OH. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and has served in various roles for the Catholic Health Association of the U.S., American Hospital Association, Texas Hospital Association, Illinois Hospital Association; the Illinois Catholic Health Association and the Catholic Health Association of Texas. Mr. Buckley is a recipient of the Bishop's Award for work on behalf of the Diocese of Phoenix as well as the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Award for work on behalf of the Diocese of Belleville in Illinois.
