Global Health

Who We Are

The Department of Global Health offers innovative academic programs and research and service opportunities designed to give students the attitudes, knowledge and skills they need to improve the health and well-being of people around the world. The Department's graduate and undergraduate training promotes interdisciplinary intellectual and professional growth that responds to the changing health and disease environment of the 21st century. Faculty members are affiliated with the many international governmental and nongovernmental organizations based in Washington, DC, and students have extensive access to internships and other learning opportunities designed to expose them to national and international public health challenges.

The GW Center for Global Health works to advance learning and scholarly service to strengthen the links between science and policy development and improve the response to critical health issues around the world.

Academic Programs

The Department of Global Health offers the following degrees and programs:

Practicum

Attached are Practicum-related documents by GH MPH curriculum. Please note that all Practicums must be pre-approved by the Practicum Director. All questions regarding the Practicum should be directed to: practicumglobalhealth@gmail.com.

  • Students who entered Fall 2006 or later

  • Students who entered Fall 2005 - Summer 2006

  • Students who entered GH MPH program prior to Fall 2005

  • Culminating Experience Syllabus

    Attached is the syllabus for the Culminating Experience. All students who entered the program in Fall 2006 and later must complete this two credit requirement. Students should see their Faculty Advisor for details.
  • Global Health Service Fellows Program

    The Center for Global Health at the George Washington University invites eligible MPH candidates from the Global Health department to apply for a limited number of Global Health Service Fellowships (GHSF). Fellowships are intended to:

    • Recognize academic achievement and service in the Department of Global Health; and
    • Provide financial support to service-oriented practicum experiences with one of the Center's partner institutions.


    GHSF awards cover roughly half of the total estimated cost of a fellow's tuition, airfare, and room and board.

    Service projects currently address:

    • Child Health, Hunger and HIV/AIDS in East Africa;
    • Community Health Programming in South Asia;
    • Health and Nutrition Surveillance and Evaluation Strengthening in Latin America and the Caribbean; and
    • Global Health Governance Monitoring of the executive boards of international organizations with major roles in global health.


    GHSF applications will be solicited, and selections made, according to the following timeline:

Research and Community Activities

The mission of the GW Center for Global Health is to advance global health, primarily through research and scholarly service focused on improving the linkages among science, policy and best practice.

Faculty research expertise includes:

  • HIV and Nutrition Policy
  • Obesity
  • Resource Tracking
  • Costing
  • Child Health
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Reproductive Health
  • Infectious Disease
  • Economics of Health

Examples of recent faculty activities:

  • Research on the prevalence and nature of Intimate Partner Violence in the former Soviet country of Albania
  • Analyses of data related to hypertension mortality and infant mortality in the District of Columbia
  • Research on the relation of public health policy to infant mortality within the U.S.
  • Advisement on Global Health at the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars
  • Publication development and advocacy work for strategies and best practices to end child hunger through nutrition programs
  • Participation in the Center for Global Development's working group on resource tracking
  • Publication development on opportunities for policymaking in global health

Students pursuing a Master of Public Health degree are required to complete a practicum in their field of interest in global health, as well as write on a culminating experience on a pertinent global health issue. This allows students to make intellectual contributions to the Department while advancing their own academic training. Current practicum opportunities include:

  • Conducting a needs assessment with The AIDS Service Organization (TASO) in Uganda
  • Working to strengthen community health at a hospital and community health center in India
  • Helping to develop and enhance a surveillance network and establish relations between the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States
  • Evaluating large scale nutritional programs in Latin America
  • Collaborating on information sharing in global governance activities in Brussels, Geneva, Rome, Copenhagen, New York, and Washington D.C.

The Department's research and service work is conducted through The GW Center for Global Health. Guided by the principles of human rights and social justice, the Center collaborates with worldwide partners to generate, disseminate and apply knowledge of critical global health issues, particularly those affecting disadvantaged people, both in the United States and around the world.

  • Immigrant and minority populations, with a special emphasis on the Hispanic community
  • Reproductive health
