FACULTY


Alan E. Greenberg, MD, MPH, Center Founder and Director, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics; co-founder and Co-Director of the GW HIV/AIDS Institute; PI of the Public Health-Academic Partnership with the DC DOH; Co-Investigator of the CDC-funded National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system in DC; PI of the Partnership for Pediatric AIDS and Public Health with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF); PI of several HIV/AIDS-related projects with WHO and UNICEF; and Site Leader of the DC Clinical Research Site for the NIH-funded HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN). Dr Greenberg is Co-Director of the Graduate Certificate Program in HIV/AIDS Studies, Course Director for Organizational Responses to the HIV/AIDS Epidemic, and a voluntary HIV/AIDS physician at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington DC.

Manya Magnus, PhD, MPH, Center Deputy Director, is an Associate Professor in the GW SPHHS Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Dr Magnus is the PI of the CDC-funded National HIV Behavioral Surveillance system in DC; PI of a Monitoring and Evaluation project with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation; PI of HPTN 061 and Co-PI of HPTN 064, two HIV Prevention Trials Network studies in DC; and Co-Investigator of the Louisiana IT Networks of Care SPNS project. She is Co-Director of the MPH Program in Epidemiology, Co-Director of the Graduate Certificate of HIV/AIDS Studies, and Course Director for the Epidemiology of HIV/AIDS course.

Amanda Castel, MD, MPH, is an Assistant Research Professor in the GW SPHHS Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Dr Castel is the PI of surveillance activities and serves as the Chief Epidemiologist in the Strategic Information Bureau at the DC DOH HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD, TB Administration; PI of the Project HEART assessment at EGPAF; and Project Director for the DC Cohort Study. She served as the Co-PI of the Monitoring and Evaluation project at the DOH and as an Investigator on a WHO Task-Shifting project. Dr Castel serves as the Course Director for HIV/AIDS Surveillance and the Co-Course Director for Issues in HIV Care and Treatment. She is also a voluntary attending physician at Children's National Medical Center in the Special Immunology Clinic.

Laura Guay, MD, is a Research Professor in the GW SPHHS Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Dr Guay is the Vice President of Research at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), and Co-PI of the UNICEF-funded Operational Research Secretariat with UNICEF. She is a member of the Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator's Expert Panel on the Prevention of Mother-to-Child HIV transmission, a State Department entity that makes recommendations for scaling up prevention services. She is also a member of the WHO Guideline Committee, which is reviewing guidelines for treating pregnant women and preventing HIV transmission to their infants, and the Pediatric HIV Vaccine Data Monitoring Ethics Committee, which is monitoring HIV vaccine trials in Kenya and the Gambia.

Heather J. Hoffman, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Biostatistics in the GW SPHHS Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She is an Investigator on a series of Operational Research studies with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, including "Maternity Interventions Are Key Components to Expanding PMTCT Access in Swaziland", an Infant and Young Child Feeding Public Health Evaluation Protocol in Rwanda, and an Infant Feeding PHE Protocol in Cote d'Ivoire.

Jeanne Jordan, PhD, is a Professor in the GW SPHHS Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Dr Jordan is the Director of the International Institute of Public Health Laboratory Management, the central projects in the Departmental collaboration with the Association of Public Health Laboratories; working on point of care rapid HIV diagnostics with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation; and co-Investigator on the HIV Prevention Trials Network 061 and 064 studies.

Irene Kuo, PhD, MPH, is an Assistant Research Professor in the GW SPHHS Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Dr Kuo is currently Project Director for the CDC-funded National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system in DC; PI of HPTN 064 and Co-PI of HPTN 061, two HIV Prevention Trials Network studies in DC; PI of the Hepatitis Surveillance project at the DOH; and an Investigator on the WHO Task-Shifting and Project HEART Projects (both completed).

Shelita Merchant, PhD, MPH, is an Assistant Research Professor in the GW SPHHS Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She is the Project Director for the NIH-Funded HIV Prevention Trials Network studies HPTN 061 and 064.

Dante Verme, PhD, is a Professor in the GW SPHHS Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He has provided statistical and GIS expertise to HIV/AIDS surveillance activities at the DC DOH.

Heather Young, PhD, MPH, is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services. Dr Young has provided statistical expertise to HIV/AIDS surveillance activities at the DC DOH and is currently working on examining cancer patterns among HIV-infected individuals in the District. In addition Dr. Young is providing statistical and epidemiological support for the DC Cohort study.

ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF


Stephanie Panichello, MBA, is the Department Manager for the GW SPHHS Department of Epideiology and Biostatistics. She serves as the Fiscal Manager providing fiscal oversight for all Center research activities.

Jennifer Skillicorn, MPH, is the Center Executive Coordinator. She also serves as the Executive Coordinator for the GW HIV/AIDS Institute, the DC Partnership for HIV/AIDS Progress, and the GW SPHHS Graduate Certificate in HIV/AIDS. She also worked on a monitoring and evaluation project with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

Michelle Gill, MPH, is the Executive Coordinator for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF)-GW Partnership and the UNICEF project. She has worked on multiple projects including an evaluation of antiretroviral treatment programs in Africa in addition to EGPAF's monitoring and evaluation system.

RESEARCH STAFF


Avery Barber, is the Support Assistant for the HIV Prevention Trial Network (HPTN) studies.

Laura Divens, is a Research Assistant/Laboratory Technician for the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) studies.

Melissa Douglas, RN, is the Study Nurse for the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) studies.

Michelle Folkers is the Field Coordinator for the Community Services Assessment project funded through the DC DOH.

Anna Kuan-Celarier, is a Research Assistant / Laboratory Technician for the Molecular Detection of Bloodstream Infections in High Risk Individuals project.

Luz Montanez is a bilingual (English/Spanish) field Interviewer who works on the data collection for National Health Behavior Studies (NHBS) projects.

James Peterson, EdD, MHA, is a Research Scientist and Ethnographer contributing to several of the DC DOH, HRSA and NIH-funded research projects. He is also the Principal Investigator for the Community Service Assessment project funded through the DC DOH.

Gregory Phillips, MPH, is the Data Manager for the National Health Behavior Studies (NHBS) project.

Ashley Price is the Peer Health Navigator for the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) studies.

Anthony Rawls is a critical member of the Center and serves as the Field Supervisor for the National Health Behavior Studies (NHBS) project and will be the Community Engagement Specialist for the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) studies.

Katherine Shelley, MPH, is a Research Associate who plays a key role in the data collection and analysis for a couple of projects, including study coordination of the three country antenatal rapid syphilis testing study with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and Data Manager for the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) studies.

Sandra Soto, is a Research Associate / Field Coordinator for the Community Services Assessment (CSA) and Qualitative Behavioral Assessment through the DC Department of Health.

Christopher Chauncey Watson is the Field Supervisor for the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) studies.

Amber Young is the Peer Health Navigator for the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) studies.

GRADUATE STUDENTS


DOH Community Services Assessment (CSA) and Qualitative Behavioral Assessment: Three students are supporting this community assessment funded through the DC Department of Health.

DOH HIV Surveillance: Nine students will be working as student interviewers for surveillance activities under the supervision of Dr Castel, contributing enormously to the conduct of HIV/AIDS surveillance in the District, while being mentored in the field of HIV/AIDS.

DOH Hepatitis Surveillance: Two students will be working as student interviewers for surveillance activities under the supervision of Dr Kuo, contributing enormously to the conduct of Hepatitis surveillance in the District, while being mentored in the field of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis.

National Health Behavior Study: Six students will be working as student interviewers for research activities under the supervision of Dr Magnus, contributing to HIV/AIDS research in the District, while being mentored in the field of HIV/AIDS.

GWU-Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Partnership for Pediatric AIDS: One student is currently supporting research efforts through this partnership.

UNICEF: Three students have supported research activities and events funded through the UNICEF project.
