In Memoriam - Sue Rose
Susan G. Rose, MPH, JD, 58, a prominent advocate for people injured by drug reactions from the anti-malarial drug mefloquine, died Sept. 8 of coronary heart disease in Silver Spring, Maryland. She earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Oregon, her MPH at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and her law degree at Hastings College of Law in San Francisco. Ms. Rose, a lawyer and public health expert, was creator and co-director of Lariam Action, an organization dedicated to provide information and support to those experiencing mefloquine drug reactions. Mefloquine has been widely used for the prevention of malaria by the military, Peace Corps, and international travelers and has received publicity for its serious neurological side effects. She was producer/director of the documentary Take As Directed, about mefloquine use and it consequences. Ms. Rose was also an expert on the use of scientific evidence in decision-making for legal and public health communities, editing a book on the subject and teaching at George Washington University, School of Public Health & Health Services. Ms. Rose was also an avid orchid grower and volunteer for the golden retriever rescue organization GRREAT.
