Alumni Profiles

"GW really set the foundation for me. I already had a clinical background as a nurse, and it really helped change the trajectory of my career. It gave me more of a prevention and health education focus. I had been seeing patients when they were already sick. It helped me change my perspective so I could go out and educate people about public health, educate them about health care issues and help them improve the quality of life and ultimately lead healthier lives.

About seven years ago, I founded my own company, Health Resource Solutions, and taken the health promotion/disease prevention knowledge I gained at GW and turned it into full-size, full scale management consulting company in which I help the government, nonprofits, pharmaceutical companies develop solutions to health care issues that primarily affect the underserved and minority communities."

-- Venessa Perry, MPH in Health Promotion Disease Prevention
President, Health Resource Solutions, Inc.

"The education and training I obtained at GWU have paved a way for my dynamic career in public health. My GWU School of Public Health experience included a combination of fascinating coursework, direct access to professors, and connections to the larger public health community both domestically and internationally-all allowing me to learn diverse tools and develop skills to contribute to the improvement of public health. I am currently working as a Strategic Information Officer for the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, in the U.S. Department of State."

-- Jordana M. De Leon, MPH Program in Epidemiology Program
Strategic Information Officer, Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator

"I can definitively say that my graduate degree in environmental and occupational health from the School of Public Health and Health Services at George Washington University has helped be a better professional. I rely on my training in epidemiology, biostatistics, behavioral sciences, and program evaluation on regular basis for my work in water and sanitation. The skills that I gained not only help me understand public health issues but also communicate them to others."

Craig Kullman, MPH in Environmental and Occupational Health Program

"The Exercise Science program at George Washington University allowed me to discover new possibilities, where I once thought of opening a gym or working in a wellness clinic I was introduced to rehabilitation in hospitals, research and even policy. The program offered a public health perspective on what is usually thought of as a one-on-one profession. The professors are eager to help you find your path, which helped me in the interview process at The National Institutes of Health, the largest research hospital in the country. I now lead exercise programs, supervise exercise tests and am working to develop guidelines for a population that up until now has no specific direction when it came to exercise. I am able to do what I love in a job that I never knew existed until I attended GW."

-- Michelle Kennedy, MS in Exercise Science Program
Protocol Manager for the Pulmonary Hypertension protocol, Rehabilitation Medicine Department at the NIH Clinical Center

"Washington DC is an ideal city in which to learn about health programs and policies, both domestic and international. There are many opportunities here to work with governmental, non governmental, and international organizations that are involved in promoting public health. I have been in Washington DC for over six years, and there is more attention to global health now than at any previous time. This is an excellent place to begin one's career in public health."

-- Bryan Schaaf, MPH in International Health Promotion Program

"The alumni of the HSML program are some of the most remarkable and devoted people you'll meet. Whether traveling for work, attending a healthcare conference, or searching for a job - I'm very impressed with the quality and passion they have for their career and development of future leaders.

Both during the program and as a recent graduate, you find alumni who inspire, who challenge you, who make you excited and who you reach out to when you have a question, and who are there for you when you need support. The alumni definitely made my experience at GW that much more rewarding."

-- Brian Orgen, Master of Health Services Administration, Management and Leadership concentration
Senior Consultant, ECG Management Consultants

"The training and knowledge I received have really helped me apply, in a very practical and very useful way, the skills that allow me to work in operations and administration, heading up the chronic and long term care programs in the District of Columbia's Medicaid program.

Many advanced degrees focus on theoretical, and a unique aspect of the GW program is that it is beyond theoretical. There is a very large component that focuses on the practical applied applications. Having that focus inspired me, and gave me the confidence and the experience to leverage my coursework, skills, and leadership development and apply it in my current day-to-day work."

Michelle Kitchman Strollo, DrPH in Health Policy Program
Associate Director, Office of Chronic & Long-Term Care at DC Department of Health Care Finance
