Dear Colleagues,

On Friday, October 16, the School received two bits of good news that I wanted to share with you.

The first comes from our HSML department. Competing in the finals against teams from University of Michigan, University of North Carolina, and Rush University in Chicago, GW's team of three second-year Masters in Health Service Administration students, Angela Raphael, Laura Munroe and Tony Huynh, took first place in the 14th Annual The National Association of Health Services Executives Case Competition. More information on their win and the competition can be found here. Please join me and the School in congratulating these students.

The second bit of good news comes from the Board of Trustees annual autumn meeting.  Mr. Robert Perry, chair of the Medical Center Sub-Committee of the Board, offered his report on the status of the SPHHS and shared the scholarship challenges faced by our students and how we lose more than a dozen students from each class as they enter their second year without financial support.

Mr. Perry then called on Ms. Zoë Beckerman, JD '05, Graduate Certificate - Health Policy '05, and recent alumni trustee, to talk about the importance of the school, our gifted faculty and alumni, and the profession of public health.  After an inspired and brief presentation, she made a very generous public gift and challenged other members of the board to match her contribution.  By the time I left the meeting a dozen board members had pledged over $50,000 in contributions to support our student scholarship effort.  Please join me in thanking Mr. Perry, Ms. Beckerman, and the entire Board of Trustees for their generosity, advocacy, and commitment to the School and our future.

Be well,

Josef J. Reum
Interim Dean
