Graduate Financial Aid

If you indicated on your admissions application form that you plan to apply for a loan or Federal Work Study, a packet containing the GW Loan Questionnaire and instructions for completing the Stafford Master Promissory Note (MPN) electronically will be mailed to you by March. The packet will also include instructions on applying for the graduate Plus Loan and information on alternative loans. If you wish to be considered for Federal Work Study, circle "yes" in Section B of the GW Loan Questionnaire. If you do not receive this packet, please request one by contacting the Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA), Rice Hall 310, 2121 Eye Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20052; Phone: 202/994-6620; Email: finaid@gwu.edu.

Note: GW is an approved lender for the Federal Stafford Loan and currently offers 0% origination fees to those students who choose GW as their lender. Loan funds are disbursed by electronic funds transfer (EFT), not a paper check that you need to endorse, saving you valuable processing time. You can complete the MPN on-line. If you wish to use GW as your lender, be sure that the GW lender code 825163 appears in the appropriate box (question 9) on the Federal Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN).

Federal Stafford Loan Program (subsidized/unsubsidized)

You must be enrolled at least half-time (enrolled for at least 5 credits each semester) to receive a Stafford Loan. Loan amounts cannot exceed your cost of attendance, minus any other resources you receive, such as grants, fellowships, stipends, assistantships, tuition benefits, etc. Cost of attendance includes your actual charges for tuition and fees, as well as standard amounts for the related costs of books and supplies, room and board, transportation and personal expenses. In general, both full-time (9 credits or more per semester) and half-time (a minimum of 5 credits per semester) graduate students with no other resources can count on being able to borrow up to $20,500 in Stafford Loans (Stafford Subsidized Loan, based on financial need by FAFSA calculation = $8500 per year, and Stafford Unsubsidized = $12,000 per year). Most graduate students prefer to apply for the $20,500 Stafford Loans to cover the fall and spring semesters, because they can receive the Stafford Loan proceeds in two equal and larger installments rather than over three semesters (fall, spring, and summer).

The federal government pays the interest on the Subsidized loan amounts while you are in school as at least a half-time student, and for six months after you graduate or withdraw, and during approved periods of deferment. With the Unsubsidized loan portion, you are responsible for paying interest from the time the loan is disbursed and then the interest and principal until the loan is paid in full. See the two Federal Stafford Loan* disbursement options below.

Pan 1- Federal Stafford Loan
Fall and Spring
Loan Types Fall Spring
Subsidized $4,250 $4,250
Unsubsidized $6,000 $6,000
Semester Total $10,250 $10,250
Pan 2- Federal Stafford Loan
Fall , Spring, and Summer Plan
Loan Types Fall Spring Summer
Subsidized $2,834 $2,833 $2,833
Unsubsidized $4,000 $4,000 $4,000
Semester Total $6,834 $6,833 $6,833

*Actual loan amounts maybe reduced by 2-3% due to default prevention/origination fees. Note: If you select GW as your lender, there will be no origination fee; you will receive the full amount of your loans.

Alternative Loans

A variety of educational loans are available to supplement other sources of aid such as GW CitiAssist. These are credit-based, consumer loans. You should compare interest rates, fees, and repayment options before applying for them. Under some programs, you will need a credit-worthy co-borrower. With others, you can borrow on your own.

Information on attractive alternative loans available to GW students will be included in your financial aid packet from the Office of Student Financial Assistance and can be found on the Office's website. The University has worked closely with lenders to create a very competitive alternative loan program. The lender(s) provide up to 100% of GW's average graduate annual cost (tuition, fees, living expenses, books, etc.) minus any current financial assistance (Stafford Loans, fellowships, etc.). The interest rate for this loan is the prime rate, capped at 10%. Payments can be deferred until graduation with 12-15 years for repayment. More information is provided in the financial aid packet. Also, visit the Office of Student Financial Assistance's website (http://gwired.gwu.edu/finaid-g) to obtain more information.

Federal Perkins Loans and Federal Work-Study

Graduate students may qualify for these campus-based, federal programs; however, funding is very limited. To be considered, you must first receive a full, Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan of $8,500 and answer "yes" to the question about these programs on your GW Loan Questionnaire. Admitted students can also directly submit a request for priority consideration for Work Study by completing the form found on-line at http://www.gwu.edu/~fellows/wkstdyapplication.pdf and submitting it as directed. Notification will only be sent to those students selected. If you are awarded Work Study, you must then find a suitable student worker position (designated as a Work Study position) at GW through the GW Career Center's Student Employment Office.

The family member must be either a student's parent, grandparent, or great grandparent. A call for applications, including detailed instructions and selection criteria, is sent out each November via the SPHHS Listserv. Approximately 9 awards of $6,000 each are made; the awards cover Spring tuition.

GWU Hospital (GWUH) Women's Board Scholars Program: Every year, the Women's Board supports a number of medical, nursing and public health students (among others) through scholarships. SPHHS students in good standing, who have been continuously employed at GWUH for at least one year prior to the application deadline AND who will be continuously employed at GWUH for at least one year upon selection, are eligible to apply. In late summer, a call for applications is distributed via the GWUH website, flyers around the Hospital, and via the SPHHS Listserv.
