Research
The research resident has the opportunity to spend the research block both at The George Washington University and at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institute of Health. The George Washington Urology Department has fostered a close working relationship with the Urological Oncology Branch of the National Cancer Institute of the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Residents work in the lab of Dr. Marston Linehan and Dr. Peter Pinto on projects concerning renal cancer, bladder cancer, and prostate cancer. Research is currently focusing on novel bladder instillation agents to treat localized bladder cancer as well as exploring image guided focal therapy of prostate cancer. Residents may also explore any desired topics they feel are interesting with the guidance of Dr. Linehan and Dr. Pinto. Additionally, work at The George Washington University is currently exploring cryo-ablation of bladder cancer as well as novel methods of preventing cavernous nerve injury during radical prostatectomy.

Personal/Free Time
Life outside of residency is full of all that Washington DC has to offer for a single person or a family. There are 3 major international airports within 45 minutes, there are 4 major sporting teams in DC so you can enjoy a football game with the beloved Redskins, or a basketball game with the Wizards or a hockey game with the Capitals. Or, you can spend an evening with the new Nationals baseball franchise at the new stadium in downtown DC. There is a fantastic nightlife and outdoor activities all year round with dozens of museums including the internationally renowned Kennedy Center. There are dozens of parks and hikes within walking distance or a short metro ride from the hospital and the Blue Ridge Mountains are a short one hour car ride. Most residents live in Washington DC or in close by Northern Virginia.
