We are welcoming an exciting new era in the George Washington University Urology Department. In 2002 George Washington University moved into a new state-of-the-art hospital, and in 2006 I became the new Chairman of the Department of Urology. Following 9 years at Johns Hopkins University, I returned to GW where I was professor of urology prior to my departure. In the two years since my return, we have added 2 more fellowship trained full time faculty members. Dr. Sotelo is fellowship- trained in pelvic reconstruction and female urology from MD Anderson, and is the director of the newly established multimodality GW Pelvic Floor Center. In addition, Dr. Bianco joined the faculty after an oncology fellowship at Sloan Kettering and was named Chief of Urologic Oncology and is the director of the newly established Prostate Cancer Center. We have also established a fellowship in laparoscopy/robotics. With this influx of new faculty along with continued support of our many clinical faculty, our surgical case load has increased by 100% in the last 2 years. We have also renovated our outpatient clinic, adding 4 additional patient rooms, a flouroscopy table and a urodynamics room.
Our greatest strength, and something I take great pride in, is our great diversity within the program. We are lucky to have full-time faculty trained from several top institutions around the country as well as an abundance of clinical faculty all of whom provide differing aspects of quality care. All faculty are general urologists; however, many specialize in care ranging from prostate and renal cancer to pediatrics to incontinence and infertility. This establishes a wealth of differing clinical and surgical cases for resident education. In addition, the location within Washington DC provides a wide range of patient population, from homeless patients to visiting dignitaries and heads of state, and all provide a wide variation in pathologic disease. The diversity extends to the residents themselves who differ in culture, nationality, and life experiences prior to joining the program, all of which enhances the program’s educational experience.
With the wave of excitement and growth we remain focused and committed to establishing a center of urologic excellence with a common goal: to provide competent and personal care to our patients and to train competent and compassionate residents who will become the next generation’s clinicians and leaders in the field of urology.
