Summer Training on Aging Research Topics-Mental Health Program
The Summer Training on Aging Research Topics - Mental Health (START-MH) Program, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and administered by the University of California San Diego, is a unique national program that offers competitive scholarships to pre-doctoral and medical students who may be interested in aging and mental health research. Students receive a $6,250 stipend for the 10-week training program. The program gives selected students an opportunity to gain research experience and work closely with established mentors/investigators in the field of aging and mental health research. During the summer experience, students will work on specific projects developed by, or in conjunction with a mentor. The training is designed for students at all research levels. Training may occur in a variety of institutions all across the country.

Writing Competition in Legal Medicine and Bioethics
STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION IN LEGAL MEDICINE
Every year, the American College of Legal Medicine (ACLM) presents a
$1,000 Award in each of the following categories, for the outstanding original paper on Legal Medicine:
The Schwartz Award: To a medical student
The Letourneau Award: To Law student
The Hirsh Award: To a Densistry, Podiatry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health Science, Health Care Administration, or Public Health Student.
Papers may deal with any aspect of Legal Medicine, including medical licensure and regulation of the profession, business aspects of medical practice, liability of physicians, hospitals, managed care organizations,
and pharmaceutical manufacturers, public health law, the physician-patient relationship, care of special patients, food and drug law, medical research, forensic science and the history of legal medicine.

HOFFMAN BIOETHICS STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION
The American College of Legal Medicine (ACLM) will present awards for three outstanding original papers written by law or health professions students on topics in Bioethics.
First Prize: $1,000
Second Prize- $500
Third Prize- $250
In addition, the ACLM will pay the costs of travel and lodging for the winner of the 1st prize to present his or her paper at the ACLM Annual Meeting, February 29- March 2, 2008 in Houston, TX. Travel and lodging arrangements will be made by the ACLM.
Papers may deal with any aspect of Bioethics, that is, with any ethical issues arising specifically within the health care arena in the 21st century. Examples of suitable topics would include the ethical implications of death and dying, reproductive rights, bioterrorism, patient-physician relationship, patient safety, pubic health, biological sciences, organ donation and allocation, biomedical and behavioral research, and medical genetics. To be considered for an award, papers must exhibit a strong emphasis on bioethics.

American College of Rheumatology Research and Education Foundation Preceptorship Awards Program
1.The ACR REF/Abbott Medical Student Summer CLINICAL Preceptorship introduces students to the specialty of rheumatology by supporting a full-time clinical experience.
This is a one-year award. Students may apply for either a four-week or eight-week program. Students will receive $1,500 per four-week session. Preceptors will receive a $500 stipend per four-week session. Students also are eligible to receive up to $1,000 in reimbursable travel funds to attend the ACR/ARHP Annual Scientific Meeting.

Online applications are due no later than February 1, 2008.

This is a one-year award and all students will complete an eight-week program. Students receive a $3,000 stipend per eight-week session and are eligible to receive up to $1,000 in reimbursable travel funds to attend the ACR/ARHP Annual Scientific Meeting. The preceptor's institution will receive a $1,000 stipend to cover related laboratory expenses.
