The Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine (GW-MITM) was founded in August of 2000 as a new type of academic microbiology department - a vibrant, interdisciplinary venture centered on translational research, applied biotechnology, and education for important infectious and parasitic diseases that initiate and perpetuate poverty and suffering all over the world.
For the last decade, GW-MITM has sought to leverage our location in the nation's capital and engage in novel collaborations to advance research into clinical applications. Today, our department is a busy enterprise. Our faculty, students, and staff manage a complex portfolio of extramurally funded projects and provide state-of-the-art educational programs and training for a new generation of future scientists and health professionals. Our research includes fundamental studies in HIV/AIDS, toxoplasmosis, and helminth infections. All of these activities are made possible through our strong ties with research partners and institutions around the globe.
