GW's Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine (GW-MITM) conducts innovative fundamental and translational research and development for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). GW-MITM has a strong tradition of training and policy advocacy for these infectious and parasitic diseases, which initiate and perpetuate poverty and suffering, worldwide.
Signature programs in the department focus on the study of HIV/AIDS, toxoplasmosis, helminth infections and helminth-induced cancers, among other programs. GW-MITM host the clinical immunology laboratories of Sabin Vaccine Development, a Sabin Vaccine Institute-funded product development public private partnership (PD-PPP) that transitions new vaccine antigens for NTDs and NIoP from discovery through product development and into Phase 1 clinical trials. GW-MITM has created a sustainable foundation for long-term research and state-of- the-art training through the following core competencies:
Research Center for Neglected Diseases of Poverty
