Overview

GW's Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine (GW-MITM) conducts innovative fundamental and translational research and development for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). GW-MITM has a strong tradition of training and policy advocacy for these infectious and parasitic diseases, which initiate and perpetuate poverty and suffering, worldwide.

Signature programs in the department focus on the study of HIV/AIDS, toxoplasmosis, helminth infections and helminth-induced cancers, among other programs. GW-MITM host the clinical immunology laboratories of Sabin Vaccine Development, a Sabin Vaccine Institute-funded product development public private partnership (PD-PPP) that transitions new vaccine antigens for NTDs and NIoP from discovery through product development and into Phase 1 clinical trials. GW-MITM has created a sustainable foundation for long-term research and state-of- the-art training through the following core competencies:

  • A core of 12 faculty conducting research on NTDs and NIoP with papers appearing in the world's highest impact journals.
  • A complex and multidisciplinary research portfolio with approximately $8 million annually in sponsored research supported both by federal and non-federal agencies.
  • An experienced research team with a diverse range of expertise and skills, which is supported by a program management group and specialized dedicated facilities able to support complex research initiatives.
  • Educational curricula adapted for the needs of the training of a new cadre of infectious disease researchers, physicians and health professionals.
