About the School

USMLE Step III Policy

 Purpose:   To ensure that graduates of all GWUMC ACGME accredited training programs are capable of competent, independent practice in their respective specialties and qualified to obtain a full, unrestricted medical license.

 Requirements: 

  1. All residents must take and pass USMLE Step III  by the end of the PGY 2  year to be eligible for appointment to the PGY 3 year. 

  2. Residents who fail to complete the Step III examination within the required time period may be dismissed from the training program.  Program directors have the option to allow individuals to continue on to the PGY 3 level once a passing score on USMLE Step III is achieved.

  3. All residents entering a program at the PGY 3 level and higher must have a passing score on USMLE Step III to be eligible for appointment to the program.

  4. Residents who are at the PGY 3 level and above on July 1, 2007 will have one year to meet the step III requirement.

 Effective Date: July 1, 2007
